Volume 2, Issue 12

Hello [rank] [name],

Inside this issue:

  • SubspaceLink down :(

  • Treklog 2.0 progress

  • 3 promotions to report

SubspaceLink down

Well, the server that I hosted the SubspaceLink with is down forever, I have a new, even more powerfull server lined up for the fall where I will host the subspacelink domain name, but for the remainder of the summer, the subspacelink will be down. Because I want there to still be something I will continue to write these newsletters and I will keep a smaller version of the site at my Yahoo!Geocities webpage. So for the summer, the subspacelink will be made up primarily at http://www.geocities.com/~sttngfan/. I will allow people to join the subspacelink through that page so that they can be added to the newsletter but the domain name, chat room, web-poll, and a few other features will remain down for the summer. In the mean time, I will work on the pages offline so that when the new server is up, the sublink will be better then ever. Just for your information, I'll tell you about one of the new features of the sublink website.

COMING SOON to the SubspaceLink website:

The Holodeck gaming area. To start out, there will be a few JAVA games that you can play on the website, but shortly afterwords I will be iniitroducing some other games, perhaps a link to a special chat room where we will do multiplayer Role playing games, but that will be a ways in the future.

I will continue to keep you posted on the progress of the subspacelink domain name and when it will come back up. I'll fix up the Geocities website in the next couple days.

Treklog 2.0 progress update

The progress of the programming of Treklog 2.0 is coming along well. A few weeks ago I released a special Beta1 to a few select members who sent me back in a Bug report and I fixed them as well as adding a new NotePADD text editor module and am just about ready to release a Beta2, unlike Treklog 1.2 I don't want to rush myself, so I'm releasing these small betas first to these select people to make sure that everything works before I go public. As of this moment, I'm making Treklog 1.2 available to the general public. Treklog 2.0 will be like 1.2 in that it will be only available to members until I make a new version in which case it will become public like I'm making 1.2 to be right now. The purpose of this is I want you (the SubspaceLink members) to have the latest and greatest of my creations.

One feature that I will be integrating into the final version 2.0 but won't be in Beta2 (perhaps it will be in Beta3) is the ability of speech. I've recently found (thanks to Ensign Locutus) a program that when linked to via DDE can convert Text to speech and am experimenting with a way to link treklog to this program so that Treklog can talk to you (just as our beloved computer from star trek does), however, as of Treklog 2.0 there will NOT be a voice command feature, so you will be able to have Treklog read your logs back to you, but you won't be able to dictate your logs. Perhaps I will find a way to make that feature before version 2.5 or 3 depending on how big of an update I make in the next version.

Another major new feature in Treklog 2.0 (this one will be in the Beta2 but not complete until the final version) is the NotePADD module. The NotePADD is a text editor that you can use to view and edit text files. It won't be the best text editor you've ever seen, but it is already much nicer then Notepad that comes with windows. On the left of the text editing window is a PADD that contains: file statistics such as the stardate, earthdate, and time that the file was last updated, and the number of lines and characters in the file as of the last save. Perhaps before the final version 2 I will make that number be the number of lines and characters in the file and have it change as you type. Another thing that you will see on the PADD is a macroset. This macroset is a database of macros that you can change that does the following. If you double click the macroname in the macrolist it will insert the contents of the macro into the document. There will be 4 sets of macros. The first set of macros (not changable) will be a complete ANSI characterset so that you can insert characters such as © and other non keyboard characters easily and quickly. The 2nd set of macros (not changable) will be the characterset again but instead of just inserting the character it will insert the HTML code that generates that character, (e.g. to make the character '>' in html you have to use ;&gt or it will see the '>' as part of an html tag.). The 3rd set of macros (this one IS changeable) will be HTML tags, this will help you write HTML code by simply clicking the tag you want to insert to cut out all the extra typing involved. The 4th set of macros (changeable) will be for any macros that you want to create that are not available in the other macrosets.

I will continue to keep you posted on the status of programming Treklog and when the final release date.

3 promotions to report

The following 3 promotions need to be reported:

  • Cadet Locutus has been promoted to the rank of Ensign

  • Ensign MacDonald has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade

  • Lieutenant Veldman has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander

Congratulations to all 3 of you, all promotions are as of Stardate 099501.0 (today). Congratulations to you all, and thank you for your assistance in my programming Treklog. If you guys haven't guessed already, the 3 of them have been helping me with beta testing Treklog and with some other programming problems I have had with TL.

Well with the site down I cannot end like I usually do, I'll keep you posted as to when the site will be back up.

Admiral Victor Scott Regnum
Chief of Starfleet Communications
